The Most Wonderful Time of the Year...in Early September

The Issue

Consumers do not have a lot of individual power versus large corporations. When we band together we have much greater power but, it is our wallets that have the greatest power.

Corporate greed and one-upmanship in this country has truly gotten out of control. I have had many conversations with others in the past decade regarding how corporations keep encroaching on the calendar and forcing consumers to deal with holiday consumerism far before the actual holiday.

Today, I hit my limit in Costco. Upon entering a local Costco, I was stunned to be assaulted with Christmas decor! Yes, it was an assault since it occurred in early September. Breaking out Christmas  SEVEN weeks before Halloween? Why would Costco find it appropriate to break out Christmas when the holiday will not arrive for another 3.5 months?  It all boils down to money and greed.

I am imploring consumers to NOT buy a single Christmas item before Thanksgiving and not a single Thanksgiving item until after Halloween. Do the Christmas decorations invoke warm feelings for many? Yes, but they do not belong in stores before we have embraced the previous holiday.

Corporations do not take into consideration that their continual encroachment becomes stressful for so many people. No one needs to start worrying about Christmas when they are recovering from back-to-school needs.

Let your wallet be your voice and refuse to purchase a single Christmas item before Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving items before Halloween, or Halloween items before the end of September! If consumers do not buy these items before an appropriate date, businesses will not use valuable floor space to display them.

Please share this and, as consumers, let’s take back control of our calendars.
