We urge a lift up of the minimum age of marriage in Tanzania to 18 for both boys and girls

The Issue

The Tanzania's Law of Marriage Act of 1971 sets the minimum age at 18 for boys and 15 for girls with parental consent. It also permits both girls and boys to marry at 14 with a court’s permission.

This law is discriminatory against girls and enhances favorable condition for child marriage. Child marriage limits girls’ access to education, exposes them to exploitation, subjects them to violence – including marital rape and female genital mutilation (FGM), and uncovers them from reproductive health risks.

Youth for Change Tanzania is calling for the law to be amended and set the minimum age of marriage to 18 years for both boys and girls’
