Stop the Melville Council Using Glyphosate

The issue

The Melville Council and many other metropolitan councils are STILL using glyphosate based herbicides. They are doing so based on outdated regulatory advice from the Department of Health (DOH) and the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) in relation to the use of glyphosate.

‘Glyphosate, sold as Roundup, has been banned in dozens of countries worldwide and by multiple Australian local governments because of its toxicity to humans’ so why is the Melville council and other Perth councils like the City of Vincent STILL using it???

‘Calls to ban the weed-killers in Australia have grown in recent years following international bans and a multi-billion dollar lawsuit.

In 2020, Bayer paid out US$10.9 billion in settlements over a lawsuit alleging glyphosate causes cancer.‘

- ABC News

‘A glyphosate based herbicide is used to target annual and perennial weeds within streetscapes (kerb lines & footpaths etc..) and reserves’

- Weed Management- City of Melville (on their website)

There are many alternatives to managing weeds without using glyphosate or toxic poisons. The alternatives won’t even cost more. Let’s tell our local councils that we’ve had enough of them using carcinogenic toxic poisons that contain glyphosate in our suburbs!
