Heathfield Tennis Club started this petition to The Mayor

For the last four years, we as The Heathfield Tennis Club have asked the City of Cape Town to  assist us with fixing and upgrading the Chadwin Road, Elfindale tennis courts (currently leased by South Peninsula High School) in order for us to provide a voluntary tennis coaching programme to the youth of surrounding areas, Grassy Park, Lavender Hill, Steenberg, Retreat and Heathfield.

We did not foresee the longevity and sustainability of running such a programme, let alone revive the successful Heathfield Tennis Club of the 80's and 90's without any form of shelter/clubhouse, ablution facilities, and of course, tennis courts of a reasonable standard. We did however soldier on, and started coaching the learners of Heathfield Primary on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, with Saturday morning sessions added due to the overwhelming response.

In the Interim, we were pushed from pillar to post by the City of Cape Town, from being told there is no money for an upgrade, to being told they will look at how they can assist, and then backtracking that they cannot assist as we do not own the lease of the facility. We requested two wheelie bins to manage refuse. Twice. This simple request also fell on deaf ears. In four years, our ward councillor Kevin Southgate has provided little support or guidance and shown no accountability, merely passing the buck. He has not met with us once, ever. We took it upon ourselves to reach out to MayCo member for community services, Zahid Badroodien who has subsequently told us he cannot assist as this issue does not reside within the Community Services and Health Directorate. Yes thats right, a community services problem that does not reside within the Community Services Directorate. We are fighting a complacent City of Cape Town. We have laid bare our "business proposal" with a vision to provide tennis for social and competitive, young and old players, girls and boys...and more so for girls that have limited other sporting options.

We have appealed for the custodianship of these courts, to facilitate tennis amongst all schools and the community, for as many as possible to benefit. We have pleaded with the City to upgrade this facility. We do not want to use an alien Port Jackson tree as a clubhouse and ablution facilities as we did in the 90's. We want facilities that we can be proud of, that can attract many. We want change. We want dignity.

Please help us by signing this petition. Let us be heard!
