In the Maldives, sanitary napkins are subject to GST at standard rates because they are not considered an "essential" product.

Just to give you some perspective:

PADS: Used by a large percentage of the female population (FYI the female population makes up half the total population)

ADULT DIAPERS: Used mainly by the sick and the elderly (a relatively SMALL percentage of the total population)

And yet adult diapers are deemed "essential" and sanitary napkins are deemed a "luxury".
