Jason 'Dadz' Morgan should be on the Jamaica team to Rio2016

The Issue

Jason Morgan World Class Athlete. Olympian (born 6 October 1982) is a Jamaican discus thrower. On June 6, 2015 Morgan achieved the Jamaican record in the discus throw (68.19meters).

He won the silver medal at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He also competed at the 2007 World Championships 2011 World Championships and 2012 Summer Olympics.

He was fourth at the recent Jamaica Athletics Administrative Associations (JAAA) National Senior Championships held at the National Stadium with a best throw of 59.08m behind Fedrick Dacres with 62.27m, Chad Wright with 61.83m, and Traves Smikle with 61.72m. At the time of competing Jason was suffering from a broken metatarsal.

Despite being one of only two throwers achieving the qualifying distance, Morgan has been left off the 63 man team selected for Rio 2016

Dr Warren Blake, president of the JAAA explained Morgan’s omission, saying the athlete failed to replicate that 2015 form.

“Jason’s history is that he only throws the qualifying distance at one meet and he never repeats. He never even comes within the zone,” said Dr Blake.

“He didn’t come within the top three, so he has no automatic place on the team. He only throws the qualifying standard at a particular meet early in the season and he never repeats himself, so it was the view of the selection committee that he should not be chosen,” he noted.

Dr Blake also revealed that there were doubts about the credibility of the meet that Morgan achieved his qualifying standard.

Jason 'Dadz' Morgan has been representing his country since 2000 , he embodies the Olympic values & ethics and is a true ambassador for Jamaica and the sports of athletics.

We the fans of Jason 'Dadz' Morgan believe this is a disingenuous remark by the president of the JAAA and we call on the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sport The Hon Olivia 'Babsy' Grange MP to ask Dr Warren Blake to retract the unprofessional statement and to include Jason 'Dadz ' Morgan on the team to Rio 2016 based on merit.
