Thank you all again for taking the time to sign this petition, express you support for Veterans, helping Hot Springs, SD, and advocating for an important resource to our American Community. The Rapid City Journal's reporter, Bart Pfankuck, stated, "About 100 health care jobs would then be created at a VA inpatient residential treatment facility to be built in Rapid City" (January 7, 2017). This is not true; there will not be any residential facility built in Rapid City, SD it is only an outpatient clinic and does not meet the needs of Veterans that need residential services. The closest Veterans Hospital for residential needs in located in Fort Meade, SD over 88 miles away. If it were 88 miles on the East Coast, for example, Hampton, VA to Richmond, VA on a clear sunny day it would not be an issue to drive for over an hour; however, in South Dakota, an hour and a half drive can be exceptionally treacherous on the highways through the mountains, in potential blizzards with total white out conditions. The environment is a huge factor, distance to services, and the difference between what a hospital offers Veterans compared to only an outpatient clinic that is also over 57 miles away and over an hour to drive on equally dangerous highways to Rapid City, SD from Hot Springs, SD. Justin, Administrator for SAVE the VA on Facebook, stated, "Please correct people if you hear them say that Rapid City will be getting a VA hospital in place of Hot Springs. I have already heard this misunderstanding a few times and it is everyone's duty to correct it; Rapid City will be getting a Multi-Specialty Outpatient Clinic. There will be only ONE hospital in the area: Ft. Meade. Expect more referrals to private providers... OH, and remind them that this movement may literally be a matter of life and death for some rural veterans" (January 8, 2016). I emailed the reporter, Bart Pfankuch, on January 9, 2017, and have not heard anything back from him to date. I noticed that the story was edited on January 7, 2017, but it is still not accurate. Please see the email details in my statement in the following: Good Morning Mr. Bart Pfankuch, My name is Caroline Lane and I have been following the story for over 5 years, reading the documents published by the VA Administration, and listening to the people in the town. The story you published on Friday, January 6, 2017 regarding the closure of the hospital in Hot Springs, SD was only partially accurate. They are closing the hospital but they are not building a residential hospital in Rapid City, SD. It is an outpatient facility only and your story needs to be retracted, corrected, and apologies made for the inaccurate message published by your paper. Please be advised that I will be posting a copy of my email on social media sites, as well as, updating all the followers on SAVE the VA regarding this story. The inaccurate message has mislead your reading audience and created a false sense of hope, confusion, and misinformed the people that count on you for information. I greatly appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank You, Caroline Lane
