Help us save our heritage Worker Cottages street in Hawthorn East

The Issue

STOP A HERITAGE STREET FULL OF 1880's WORKER COTTAGES BEING BULLDOZED. PROTECT ROSEBERRY STREET FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Roseberry Street is an historic street in Hawthorn East with many more houses exactly like the above. It dates from 1884 and has 50+ Victorian era cottages, lived in by ordinary people for well over 115 years. Many have been lovingly restored.

BUT..TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR THE STREET!!

The street has no heritage protection and developers are targeting the street. Four cottages have already been demolished in 2021, including two shown above, with another recently proposed to be bulldozed.

We want the council and state government to give these houses heritage protection before it is too late.

Council agrees that over 50 houses meet the state criteria to be "Contributory heritage grade". The current out of date heritage regulations make it more difficult for a council to protect heritage houses if there are also some non heritage houses in the same street. These inadequate regulations make no sense when you have a small old street like this one with over 50 heritage houses on it.

Concerned residents have asked the Boroondara Council to provide protection for heritage houses in their street and for it to be included in the nearby Brickfields Environs Heritage Precinct. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

PLEASE sign and share this petition with as many people as you can to show the planning minister and Boroondara Council how important these places are.

As one street resident said:

"People on the street have been renovating them for years. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. They are perfect homes for young families, singles and renters and it looks as though they are going to be demolished one by one, put into landfill and replaced by more expensive houses, pushing prices up further".

"They were built as houses for the workers of Hawthorn and many people worked at the famous Fritsch Holzer Brickworks which the street bordered. They are an important part of local history and people have always thought this was a heritage street".

A spokesperson for community heritage group – The Boroondara Heritage Group for Advocacy & Protection (Boroondara Heritage GAP) said:

“Right across our oldest suburbs, communities, historians and heritage architecture experts tell us they are concerned. The early suburbs of our great city are the guardians of most of Melbourne's famous heritage architecture. Roseberry Street is another example of the current heritage protection framework not working properly to preserve some important heritage architecture and streets. This does not meet community expectations.

These are small, perfectly liveable, 100-year-old heritage houses going into landfill. This is not in the community’s, nor the climate’s interest."

Thank you very much for your support. From: The Friends of Roseberry Street & Boroondara Heritage GAP.
