By signing this petition, we place ourselves on record urging that Holocaust mockery, Holocaust-related taunts, antisemitic chants, hissing associated with the Holocaust, and similar conduct at Dutch football matches come to an end.
Our signatures are a statement. We believe Holocaust mockery has no place in football - or anywhere in civilized society.
Together, we urge the good people of the Netherlands - football supporters, clubs, educators, community leaders, public officials, and fellow citizens - to use their voices, their example, and their influence to help bring these practices to an end. History has shown that lasting change often begins when ordinary people decide that certain conduct is simply no longer acceptable.
For Those Unfamiliar with the Issue
At certain matches involving Ajax Amsterdam, a club long associated by many supporters and opponents with the nickname “the Jewish team,” some opposing supporters have engaged in Holocaust-related chants, antisemitic taunts, and hissing intended to evoke the gas chambers. These actions have caused deep pain to Holocaust survivors, Jewish communities, and many others who believe that the Holocaust should never become an object of ridicule.
Six million Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in the Holocaust. Their memory deserves dignity, remembrance, and respect - not mockery.
The Higher Ideals of Sport
Sport has often demonstrated humanity at its best. One of history’s enduring examples came during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where the friendship between Jesse Owens and German athlete Lutz Long became a lasting symbol of mutual respect overcoming prejudice. Their example reminds us that athletic competition can elevate human dignity rather than diminish it.
Football should reflect those same ideals.
The Hissback Family
Our campaign is called the Hissback Family because we believe people should “hiss back” in a positive sense - that is, speak up whenever hatred, intimidation, or the mockery of human suffering appears. We believe humanity is one family, and every individual has both the opportunity and the responsibility to encourage respect, reject antisemitism, and defend the dignity of every human being.
The Bible recounts the public mocking of Shimshon (Samson), the great Judge of the nation of Israel, in the Book of Judges.
That ancient account is reminiscent of the disrespectful public humiliation seen at some football stadiums today. Let us choose to stand on the side of honor for a biblical judge and his ideals and with the sacred memory of the Holocaust victims and their continued connection to that biblical legacy.
