The Issue

Petition to Reopen Public Access to the Hanger Seafront
We, the undersigned citizens of Belize, strongly object to the recent decision to block the streets leading to the Hanger seafront.

For decades, the Hanger has been a cherished public space where Belizeans swim, fish, launch boats, and gather with their families and friends. It is one of the few remaining accessible seafront areas in Belize City, and it belongs to the people of Belize.

Our Concerns
- The decision to close access was reportedly made following a petition signed by only 16 residents, yet it impacts countless Belizeans who use the Hanger as a public recreational space.
- Blocking public streets sets a troubling precedent of allowing small groups of individuals to deny wider citizen access to public lands and seafronts.
- Public spaces like the Hanger are vital for community life, health, and culture. Their loss disproportionately affects families and youth who rely on them for safe and free recreation.

Our Position
We believe that crime and disturbances in public areas must be addressed through law enforcement and regulation, not by denying citizens their rights. We therefore urge the Belize City Council to:
- Reopen all streets leading to the Hanger seafront immediately.
- Enhance lighting, surveillance, and police patrols in the area.
- Enforce existing laws regarding noise pollution, loitering, and public drinking.

These actions will improve safety without destroying the long-standing right of Belizeans to enjoy the Hanger.

Our Call to Action
We, the people of Belize, demand that the Belize City Council restore full public access to the Hanger seafront. This space is part of our community heritage and must remain open for the enjoyment of all Belizeans.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned Citizens of Belize
