The Greater Fort Lincoln Community Deserves Better!
The Issue
As concerned residents and stakeholders of the Greater Fort Lincoln community in Ward 5, we urgently call upon the District of Columbia Government and Council to address a myriad of pressing issues that threaten this vital gateway to our nation's capital.
Our community is more than just a point of entry to the city; it's a place of rich history and potential that has recently been overshadowed by crime, illegal dumping and a general lack of maintenance.
We implore you to prioritize the safety and maintenance of the Greater Fort Lincoln community by addressing the following issues effectively -
Illegal Dumping and Neglected Landscaping:
- The unsightly presence of trash, debris, and waist-high grass surrounding the Fort Lincoln exit off of Rt. 50 not only mars our community's image but poses a health and safety hazard.
- South Dakota Avenue, from the entrance/exit to Rt. 50 to Bladensburg Road, is woefully neglected, with overgrown grass on sidewalks and medians. It is a far cry from the "welcome to DC" we envision for our visitors.
- The grassy median on Fort Lincoln Drive between the entrance to the shopping center and Bladensburg Road requires regular maintenance. Its unkempt appearance is an eyesore and attracts rodents to the area.
- Commodore Joshua Barney Dr NE is plagued by illegal dumping and litter, including discarded rental scooters and bikes, tarnishing its natural beauty.

Abandoned Stolen and Burned-Out Cars and Trucks:
- Our community is inundated with abandoned and stolen vehicles daily
- Unauthorized commercial trucks mar our landscape, causing both aesthetic and logistical problems.
Increased Carjackings, Car Thefts, and Stolen Packages:
The daily threat of carjackings, car thefts, and stolen packages is paralyzing our community. Residents report the same perpetrators, yet the lack of police response and visibility is emboldening criminals.
We urgently request the following:
- A comprehensive plan to combat illegal dumping, including regular cleanup of trash and debris.
- A scheduled cadence to maintain South Dakota Avenue, Fort Lincoln Drive, and Commodore Joshua Barney Dr NE, ensuring these areas reflect the dignity and beauty of our city.
- A concentrated effort to remove abandoned, stolen, and burned-out vehicles from our community, along with measures to deter unauthorized commercial trucks.
- Enhanced police presence and rapid response to combat carjackings, car thefts, and stolen packages, ensuring the safety and security of our community.
We implore you to prioritize the safety and maintenance of the Greater Fort Lincoln community, making it a point of pride for all who visit and reside here. Together, we can ensure a safer, more beautiful community for everyone.
