Farhan Ahmed started this petition to The Government of India and

Every year, tens of millions of animals are sacrificed in India on Eid-ul-Azha. While I believe we can all agree that this is cruelty on an unprecedented scale, this practice cannot stop overnight. We need your help to pressure the government to move in the direction of criminalising animal sacrifice. We, the people, thus ask the Government of India to do the following:

1) Remove Section 28 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, which allows any animal to be killed in any manner required by any religion. This will prevent any and all animal sacrifices in the name of religion.

2) Provide alternative employment for goat, buffalo, sheep, etc. herders. Today, goats provide income to five million households in India. Certainly, such a large industry cannot disappear overnight. The government must take appropriate steps to provide other sources of livelihood to the people affected by this change.

3) Include in school curricula the relation between world hunger, climate change, and the meat industry. The road to criminalising animal sacrifice must be one made by the people, by their own will. A society aware of the time-bomb that is the meat industry will take up this task readily. The school curricula must include the facts that 36% of all crops produced are used for animal feed, that 1kg of chicken takes 4-5 times the amount of water needed for 1kg of wheat, and many other such facts and figures.

The road to securing animals their rights is an uphill battle, but one worth fighting for.
