The Fourth Trimester Protection Act: Mandatory Postpartum Mental Health Education
The Fourth Trimester Protection Act: Mandatory Postpartum Mental Health Education
The Issue
Every new parent deserves the knowledge to recognize postpartum mental health conditions before a crisis occurs. I am petitioning for a nationwide standard requiring age-appropriate education about postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and postpartum psychosis in school health classes, as well as mandatory education for every new parent before they leave the hospital after childbirth.
Too many families are unaware of the warning signs or where to seek help. By making postpartum mental health education a national standard in both schools and hospitals, we can better prepare future parents, educate support systems, encourage early intervention, and help protect mothers, babies, and families.
Education should not depend on where someone lives or gives birth. Every family deserves the same opportunity to learn, recognize the signs, and know when and how to seek help.
