The Issue

Artificial intelligence and automation are transforming our world at an unprecedented pace. As machines increasingly perform tasks once done by humans, we have an opportunity unlike any in history: to use this technological revolution not only to increase productivity, but to improve the quality of life for everyone.

I wrote The AI Dividend: Reclaiming Prosperity in the Age of Machines to explore this very idea. The book argues that the immense wealth and productivity created by AI should benefit society as a whole — not just corporations — by giving people more time to spend with their families, pursue education, create, volunteer, and live healthier, more meaningful lives. One of the most practical ways to achieve this vision is through a four-day workweek.

Evidence from around the world already demonstrates that working fewer hours does not mean producing less. In a trial conducted by Microsoft Japan, productivity increased by 40% after employees switched to a four-day workweek. In New Zealand, Perpetual Guardian found that productivity remained stable while work-related stress declined and work-life balance improved dramatically.

Many of the world's most productive economies, including Germany and the Netherlands, have shown that shorter working hours can coexist with economic success, innovation, and high standards of living. As AI continues to automate routine work and amplify human capabilities, there is no reason why the average worker should not share in these gains.

A four-day workweek would provide countless benefits, including improved mental health, stronger families, greater opportunities for lifelong learning, increased community involvement, and reduced environmental impact through fewer commutes. Rather than allowing AI to simply increase corporate profits, we should ensure it creates a better future for society as a whole. History shows that every major industrial revolution eventually reduced the amount of human labor required. The AI revolution should be no different.

I urge businesses, policymakers, and governments to embrace this opportunity and begin building a future where technological progress translates into greater freedom, prosperity, and balance for everyone.

If you believe that artificial intelligence should improve people's lives — not just increase corporate profits — please sign this petition and support the movement toward a four-day workweek and a future where the benefits of AI are shared by all.

Together, we can make the AI revolution one that works for humanity.
