Challenge to the FA - Protect Grassroots Football - Redistribute FA Cup Prize Money
The Issue
The FA Cup is the greatest National Cup completion in the world. Over £15m is paid out as prize money, yet the distribution is heavily weighted towards the bigger clubs - not the vast majority of football clubs who enter in August when the greatest club competition commences. The winners this season receive £1.8m - a small amount for the majority of Premier League Clubs - especially compared to the TV money coming into the game.
By comparison, the 184 winners of Extra Preliminary Round ties receive £1,500 - a hugely significant amount at that level of grassroots football. Beyond this:
160 Preliminary Round winners receive £1,925
116 First Round Qualifying winners receive £3,000
80 Second Round Qualifying winners receive £4,500
40 Third Round Qualifying winners receive £7,500
32 Fourth Round Qualifying winners receive £12,500
We feel that with a small amount of re-distribution, the funding to the real Grassroots level of our game could be changed so that:
1) The starting point for Extra Preliminary Round winners is £2,500
2) Prize money then doubles for the next 5 rounds
This would ensure that the FA Cup actually contributes to and supports the vast majority of non-league clubs who enter the greatest competition in the world rather than simply look after the chosen few.
