WGS Support at JHU
Nov 10, 2019

Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement thus far! Our message is already beginning to be heard, and is having an effect. Director of Johns Hopkins' Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Todd Shepard, recently distributed this message to the program's listserv:

Dear Scholars,
Recent discussions have raised alarms among many about what is happening with scholarly work on sexuality and gender at JHU, especially in the WGS. This merits debate.
We are calling a WGS town hall on Wednesday, November 13, at 6:30 pm. This will follow after the WGS Summer Research Fellows Workshop, which begins at 4:10 pm in Gilman 75.
Members of the Deanery promise to be there. This is a moment to engage .
Best,
Todd Shepard
Director, Program for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality
Arthur O. Lovejoy Professor of History

I encourage everyone who is available to attend this town hall, as it will be an opportunity to engage the JHU leadership and actively contest the cancellation of the fellowships. The Deans rarely make themselves available for such communication, and this will be an opportunity to advocate not just for the status of feminist and queer scholarship at the university, but for related issues of safety, accountability, and governance. Please encourage any interested parties to join.

In the meantime, feel free to email the university leadership to let them know how important these issues are:

  • President Ronald Daniels: rdaniels@jhu.edu, president@jhu.edu
  • Provost Sunil Kumar: sunil.kumar@jhu.edu, provost@jhu.edu
  • Dean Beverly Wendland: bwendland@jhu.edu, kriegerschooldean@jhu.edu
  • Vice Dean for Humanities and Social Sciences Betsy Bryan: betsy.bryan@jhu.edu
  • Vice Dean for Graduate Education, and Centers and Programs Matthew Roller: mroller@jhu.edu
  • Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion (Krieger and Whiting Schools) Darlene Saporu: dsaporu1@jhu.edu
