THE CRA MUST STOP PUNISHING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS FOR LEAVING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS.

The Issue

Every survivor of domestic violence deserves the right to safety and financial security. Yet, in Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) continues to fail survivors and their children by allowing financial abuse to persist through systemic failures. Survivors who escape domestic violence should never be forced into extreme poverty due to bureaucratic oversight or lack of proper safeguards. Coercive control and tax fraud are illegal but the victim has the burden of proof! Even if they send in everything requested the CRA will never admit fault and will stall with years of delays and beauracratic red tape!

We demand that the CRA and the Government of Canada take immediate action to:

  1. Ensure Survivors’ Rights to Safety and Financial Security: Establish policies that protect survivors and their children from financial devastation. Immediately stop decisions that leave survivors and their children without access to basic needs and security.

 2. Implement a Survivor-Centered Approach to Child Benefit Disputes

Notify any current recipient of the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) if another party applies for benefits for the same children.

Automatically place a hold on benefit changes until a proper investigation is conducted to ensure survivors’ safety.

Create a specialized domestic violence review process to prevent financial abuse through fraudulent or coercive claims.

3. Stop Punishing Survivors for Leaving Abuse

Immediately fix cases where survivors have been denied benefits due to leaving an abusive relationship.

Expedite appeals and benefit reinstatements when survivors face unnecessary financial hardships.

Establish a transparent and fair appeals process that prioritizes survivors’ well-being.

Why This Matters

Every other developed nation has safeguards to prevent government agencies from being used as a weapon against survivors of gender-based violence—but Canada refuses to acknowledge this urgent issue. The CRA’s failure to act has led to homelessness, financial destitution, and unnecessary suffering for survivors and their children. This injustice must end NOW.

I have personally been suffering this for 5 agonizing years and it is still no where near finished . It started with my abuser but ultimately the CRA have taken over and stonewalled me for years while me and my children become homeless again and again losing everything and it was always a fraud! This must NEVER happen again!

Sign this petition to demand justice, accountability, and protection for survivors and their children.

The CRA has recently forgiven a tax debt for a single most likely wealthy elite individual person! That was for more than $130 Million dollars!

It seems the only individuals the CRA actually goes after aggressively are the victims , single moms and especially the most vulnerable!

5 Years later I have gotten no where with my CRA issues and still owe more than $5k out of the $13000 debt they placed on a Survivor and her children who is owed roughly $48000 in misallocated benefits. CRA must change!

Together, we can push for real change. Survivors deserve justice, dignity, and financial security.
