My Dad, Sgt. Richard Andrew Conn’s life was defined by precision. As a soldier in Vietnam, a fire control specialist, sharpshooter, and ammunition supply sergeant, accuracy meant survival. 

After the military, my Dad carried that discipline into the aircraft industry, where one mistake could ground a plane or cost lives.

Even in his later years, delivering medications for a local pharmacy, his focus on detail saved lives in another way — ensuring his customer’s received the right medicine at the right time.

That same legacy lives on through me. As a registered nurse that specialized in vascular access and phlebotomy, my work required exactness down to the millimeter.

Today, as I now fight for VA reform, I carry forward with me my father’s precision in a different arena: policy, advocacy, and accountability.

This pattern is not coincidence. It is the inheritance of a mindset — precision as protection. Hypervigilance, attention to detail, and pattern recognition are survival tools learned in combat and passed down through family. 

It is why my grief feels like half of me is missing, but also why MY fight for reform is relentless: I am carrying forward what my father embodied.

The Conn Act honors not only Sgt. Conn, but every veteran whose service and sacrifices ripple forward through their families.

Precision should not just be demanded of veterans during war or work — it must also define the systems that serve them afterward.
