One of the darkest points in Canadian history was the creation of aboriginal residential schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has called this nothing short of "cultural genocide". The Minister of Public Works, Sir Hector -Louis Langevin quoted in 1883 - "In order to educate the children properly we must separate them from their families. Some people say that this is hard but if we want to civilize them we must do that". We can not change history, however, in good conscious we can not allow one of the key figures in the creation of aboriginal residential schools, Sir Hector-Louis Langevin, the honor of having a bridge named after him. This is a slap in the face to all of those people whose lives were greatly impacted by residential schools. As well, it is an embarrassment to Calgarians who now know this history of the person who this bridge is named after.
