The City College of New York should be a NCAA D1 Program

The Issue

I was not alive, but The City College of New York won the 1950 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Sadly, they got themselves in a scandal with other schools for a conspiracy of point-shaving, which is illegal in college sports. The University of Kentucky and LIU were also part of the scandal. However, today they have D1 programs. It has been more than half a decade, and CCNY has never made a return in having a D1 program.

Being from New York, I know that there are multiple D1 schools throughout the state. However, no school part of the CUNY program has a D1 program. As a CCNY alum, not having a sporting atmosphere in a historical school with a trophy makes the campus feel like there is an unfulfilled destiny. CCNY was the school of New York, and the school's former basketball program gave the school that title. Currently, the school mainly consists of commuter students who come primarily for their classes. The clubs present at the school help build an atmosphere, but bringing back Division 1 sports will help elevate the atmosphere. D1 sports programs will bring more excitement to campus because of possible major sporting events. Lastly, students who want a career in sports can gain more experience thanks to the possibility of obtaining sports programs ranging from sports communication to sports medicine.

However, over half a century has passed, and the City of New York deserves its D1 program back. It can help eliminate the grudge people carry when going to a CUNY. It will bring pride and more educational/professional opportunities to our school and city, and we hope to see CCNY bringing down the nets during March in the future.
