The Issue

We demand to know who at the City of Key West and Monroe County authorized KWPD and MCSO to enter into these voluntary contracts with ICE: https://www.ice.gov/doclib/287gMOA/KeyWestPDFL_TFM_MOA_030425.pdf We demand to know the budget of One Human Family and Conch Republic tax payers dollars set forth for this travesty by the person that authorized this. We demand to see all communications with whomever agreed this for our city, county and the KWPD and MCSO. We demand to cease all agreements of this sort with ICE and furthermore we demand you allocate the budget for this travesty to finding the best lawyer for when Uthmeier and DeSantis comes at OUR city for YOUR choice. We also DEMAND whoever at the City of Key West and Monroe County that authorized this to RESIGN. We demand Chief Brandenburg RESIGNS. We DEMAND CHIEF RAMSAY RESIGNS AS WELL. YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO DO THIS TO OUR ONE HUMAN FAMILY COMMUNITY!!!

Ramsay was recently found guilty of wrongfully arresting in conjunction with ICE (see link below), he is the LAST person that should be entering into a voluntary contract with ICE https://www.ice.gov/doclib/287gMOA/monroeCoSheriffsOffice_TFM_MOA_02262025.pdf

One Human Family - Key West has never been just another dot on the map.

We are the Southernmost Point, but we’ve always been on the right side of history. When injustice rose during the Civil War, we stood alone in the South as a Union stronghold. We refused to comply with cruelty then—and we must do the same now. In 1982, Key West stood up against unjust immigration policing when the U.S. government treated us like outsiders in our own home. The people of Key West didn’t stay silent—we formed the Conch Republic and reminded the world what community, courage, and Conch pride looks like.

Today, we ask our leaders to remember that legacy. Once again, we must say no to fear-based enforcement. No to ICE collaboration. And yes to our root of being the Conch Republic and One Human Family.

We are One Human Family. And we protect Children and Humanity!

That’s not just a slogan printed on rainbow stickers or hung on local signs. It’s our compass. Our promise. Our truth.

It means no family is disposable, no child should live in fear, and no person should be hunted simply for existing.

Across the country, cities like Glendale, California are standing up and cutting ties with ICE. These are bold, moral decisions. And now it’s our turn.

❌ We call on the Key West Police Department and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to:

•End all collaboration with ICE
•Disclose any current agreements, data sharing, or informal cooperation
•Affirm publicly that our island will not be a tool for separation, detention, or deportation

We are not border patrol. We are Conchs—fierce, proud, and rooted in justice.

From Bahama Village to Stock Island, and the Keys, our people come from everywhere, but our values are local: inclusion, compassion, and freedom.

If we truly are One Human Family, then let’s act like it!

If you’re undocumented, on DACA, or concerned about your safety, feel free to support anonymously. You can hide your name when signing—we honor and protect all voices.

Key West City Commission - District 2
Thank you for your email and for taking the time to share your concerns. I want you to know that I share many of the same concerns you’ve raised. In response to the recent events, I convened a group of local business owners, clergy, and concerned citizens to discuss these issues and prepare a collective response. As a result, we have developed a Community Statement(below) that outlines our shared concerns and calls for a special City Commission meeting to address the 287(g) agreement and the broader implications for our community. This statement reflects our commitment to transparency, due process, and the values that define Key West as a welcoming and inclusive city. Thank you again for your engagement. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like to be more involved or add your name to the statement. Commissioner Sam Kaufman Community Statement on Recent Immigration Enforcement Activity in Key West KEY WEST, FL — In response to recent immigration enforcement actions in Key West, a broad coalition of local business owners, clergy, residents, and public officials have come together in a unified call for transparency, compassion, and adherence to the rule of law. Our community stands in support of documented immigrants who contribute daily to the cultural and economic fabric of our island. We are deeply concerned by reports from business owners and religious leaders that individuals with documented legal status—including green card holders and those with recognized work authorizations—have been detained or removed from our community. These actions have instilled fear among families, deterred residents from attending religious services, shopping for basic necessities, and even sending their children to school. Local churches have responded with direct outreach and food deliveries, while employers are reporting disruptions to their workforce and expressing grave concern for the safety and well-being of their employees. We reaffirm our deep appreciation for the Key West Police Department (KWPD), which has consistently demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and dedication to every corner of our diverse community. We continue to believe in the guiding philosophy of "One Human Family"—a core value that defines the spirit of Key West. Commissioner Sam Kaufman has called for a special session of the City Commission to address these serious developments. Among the key concerns to be discussed: • How was the 287(g) Task Force Memorandum of Agreement implemented without formal review or approval by the City Commission? • What are the budgetary impacts of this program on city resources, and how might the City seek reimbursement for unauthorized expenditures? • How many legal residents have been detained under this enforcement activity? • How many of those detained have criminal records, and what are the broader community impacts? Key West has always been a welcoming community. Our strength lies in our diversity, and our resilience comes from our commitment to unity, dignity, and justice for all. We invite residents, business owners, and concerned citizens to add their names to this statement of solidarity. Together, we will uphold the principles of due process, human dignity, and the rule of law. One Human Family. One Unified Voice. One Key West.
