Move Velachery Bus Terminus next to MRTS Railway Station

The Issue

Velachery is a residential area in southern Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The growth of the neighbourhood during the last decade can be cited due to the growth of the IT sector in south Chennai. It acts as an important hub connecting the rapidly growing business-class information technology corridor popularly called the OMR; the more mature and well-connected GST road and the central business districts of the city. Velachery as a whole draws a perfect balance between old and new Chennai and is a phenomenon in terms of growth and development.

"Traffic congestion at Velachery junction, particularly during peak hours, is on the rise because of increasing vehicle population due to the industrial development on the IT Corridor. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has recommended construction of a flyover there. Velachery Flyover construction expected to be completed by September 2018 is said to be going as per schedule despite delays, traffic woes persist with battered roads and congestion giving a a tough time to users of three arterial roads in Velachery. Commuters using public transport complain about the time taken to cover a stretch as small as that from Vijayanagar junction To Taramani.

Ever since the construction began, traffic snarls coupled with battered roads have been giving a tough time to both motorists and pedestrians. “A trip from Vijayanagar bus stop to Taramani takes 40 minutes to an hour during peak hours". Also, the current flyover construction has occupied most of the space of existing terminus and it is being insufficient for the commuters who gather here. The options given were to shift the Velachery bus terminus near MRTS station or near Chennai Silks but the department is still considering the options,” said an official.

In the wake of the proposal to shift the Vijayanagar bus terminus to Velachery railway station, commuters of southern suburbs want the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to start operating bus services from the south side of the railway station. The commuters want MTC officials to divert some bus services that are now being operated till Vijayanagar bus terminus through the service road on the southern side of the Velachery flyover.

The Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) has become a big hit for a large number of commuters from suburbs including Madipakkam, Pallikaranai, Medavakkam and Keelkattalai. However to reach the Velachery railway station using the MTC buses, they have to take a long walk through the station road. Moreover, the vehicles starting from the Vijayanagar bus terminus are caught in traffic jams at the Vijayanagar traffic signal resulting in waste of time and fuel. Commuters say the operation of buses below the flyover on the south side would reduce traffic congestion at Vijayanagar.
