Change Californian law to disallow fur sales statewide

The Issue

Animal cruelty is hugely important. In California we give much protection to our beloved pets, animals like horses, dogs, and cats; however, many people don't give any thought to other "wild" animals, like racoons, mink, etc. It is an atrocious double standard that needs to be fixed. This is the twenty-first century, and we do not live in a climate that necessitates fur wearing. The fur industry is a grotesque one which abuses animals, usually skinning them alive, and killing by anal electrocution. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't wish this kind of treatment on my dog or cat. As such, we should not allow these horrible and degrading practices to continue. All animals are sentient beings, capable of feeling pain.

We live in a free-market  world. Everything is governed by supply and demand. If demand goes down, so too will supply.

The best way to end the fur trade is to stop allowing fur to be sold. LA already banned the sale of fur in its city. Let's do the same and go statewide.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding animal cruelty in regards to statewide fur sales. I appreciate legislative suggestions – some of the best bills come from engaged citizens who see a problem, and think of a good solution. As I understand it, you are suggesting legislation that would end the domestic production of animal fur statewide. Because I am only allowed to introduce a certain number of bills per session, and the deadline for the current session has already passed, I cannot introduce this legislation this session. I do, however, keep suggestions such as these for future consideration. If in the future I can assist you with another matter, please do not hesitate to write to me or call our district office at (916) 651-1529, or email me at senator.steinberg@sen.ca.gov.
