Calling for CSEC to pay part-time employees during NHL season suspension

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL has suspended their regular season until further notice. A lot of questions have been going around that remain unanswered: When will the NHL return? What would that look like? And what happens to the employees of NHL arenas during the suspension?

But now, we have learned that the Calgary Flames informed hourly and event employees they will not be compensated for lost shifts moving forward.

In an email obtained by Postmedia, it highlights the Flames’ stance on paying part time employees: “Unless notified by your supervisor, all scheduled shifts are cancelled. CSEC will pay for your March 12, 2020 shift if you were scheduled to work as the notice of cancellation was less than the 24 hours required by Alberta Employment Standards. Any shifts on March 13, 2020 and beyond must be pre-approved by your supervisor.”

If the Flames claim time be a community team, then they need to step up and pay their employees in this difficult time.
