Restore AAC audio and Listen Again indefinitely for internet radio devices.

The Issue

We ask the BBC Trust to implement the strategic objectives you have set for the BBC. You say you have challenged the BBC to:

1) Make the most creative and distinctive output;
2) Innovate online to create a more personal BBC;
3) Serve all audiences; and
4) Improve value for money through a simpler, more efficient, and more open BBC.

Early in February 2015, with very little warning, the BBC changed its process for its popular radio live streaming and on-demand services so that all but one brand of internet radio are unable to receive the on demand service of the BBC radio iPlayer. These changes were not made the subject of a Public Value Test by the BBC Trust, in clear contravention of Trust guidelines.

Those involved with cutting off the streams and outsourcing to a different platform appeared not to be aware of how this would affect the thousands of people who make use of internet radios to listen to the BBC.

The BBC Audio Factory internet blog has closed down the most recent debate on this subject, as the moderator judged too many people were “campaigning” against the changes being implemented.

While these changes are affecting thousands of listeners, in particular, many blind users have specialised programs and equipment to get the BBC services. They have been left with with no advice or support in how they can continue listening to the online output.

We petition either that these changes are reversed to the original service, or that changes are implemented in such a way as not to disenfranchise existing internet radio devices.

We also petition that BBC Future Media follows a policy of full, timely and open communication with its users.
