The APA and CPA should consider online programs (with practicum) for licensure.
The Issue
The American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association have duties to help those suffering from mental (or other disabilities), and yet, this has been largely an oversight for potential practitioners who are unable to adhere to the rigorous doctoral standards of in-person brick and mortar learning. With the expansion of online programs, the APA and CPA should be making waves and trying to expand the profession to those who are unable to work in regular capacities, and yet are intelligent, empathetic individuals who would make wonderful counsellors in an e-space or small practice.
Currently, there are no APA or CPA PsyD / PhD programs approved for licensure, despite programs existing, which already include practicums as part of their education. By not considering these programs, the APA and CPA are blocking wonderful individuals from the chance to help others at the level of psychologist, and effectively, are punishing the disabled for not being able to attend brick and mortar institutions.
