As you may not know, Strangles is not a reportable disease in Texas, but is highly contagious in the equine world. This particular disease is dangerous to young foalings and older horses who’s immune system is not up to par to fight off such an infection. This disease is also know to come with complications as well that could lead to death in some cases. We rely on our friends and neighbors to let us know that an outbreak is occurring, well like many people sometimes they try to remain hush hush about it and not speak up in fear, by doing this they’ve created a bigger problem, and this super spreader goes unchecked, not contained and sick horses not quarantined. I would love to see strangles be placed on the list of reportable diseases, one to keep sale barns in check and up to sanitary measures, and as well let vets offices notify stables, and horse owners notifying neighbors they have a case they’re dealing, so that proper sanitary measures can be taken to prevent further spread to healthy horses, young and older horses that don’t have a good immune system to fight off such infection. Even if it’s a suspected case, 7 days is to long to wait to start implementing sanitary measures  to contain this.
