Increase The Minimum Wage For Medicaid Personal Care Attendants In Texas

Increase The Minimum Wage For Medicaid Personal Care Attendants In Texas
The Issue
Personal care attendants are the healthcare workers who help make sure that many of our most vulnerable population are able to stay at home instead of the nursing homes. They also provide the needed relief to the family’s primary caregiver so they can take a break from the rigorously exhausting but loving duty of caring for an aged, disabled or special needs family members. Without these helpers some family members would not be able to go to work because their aged, disabled or special needs loved ones can not be left alone . They assist with personal care and activities of daily living including but not limited to meals preparation, laundry, bathing, dressing, cleaning, help with transfers, sometimes involving heavy lifting, keeping our loved ones clean and dry including incontinent care, shopping, errands and escort to medical appointments. They help us care for our parents, grandparents, other family members, friends, and loved ones safely in the comfort of their own homes. However, these attendants are paid a non-living, non-sustainable measly wage of less than $9:00/hour based on Texas remuneration rates. Texas can and should do better. This is a lose-lose for all!
