My name is Monica Nguyen, I have Neurofibromatosis Type 2. This disease causes me to have benign tumors throughout the central nervous system. Most of the tumors are found on nerve endings which greatly affect my balance, hearing, and eyesight.
I have had this disease since the age of 14 and have been on disability since the age of 18. I was on traditional Texas Medicaid and never had an issue but was switched to STAR+ which is a managed care plan. Since I was switched I have had a great deal of trouble getting the care I need.
MD Anderson is one of the only clinics that specialize in neurofibromatosis Type 2. Over the last five years, I have had three major brain surgeries that were all done at MD Anderson. My last visit to the ER I was told that I have a cluster of tumors in my spine that needed to be addressed. Due to lack of coverage I have not been able to be seen by my Neuro-oncologist or a surgeon to discuss further action. I have not been able to go to MD Anderson since February and my health is rapidly declining. I don’t have the means to travel far to go to another clinic. My family, doctors, and social workers have made many efforts to get me coverage through STAR+ but have repeatedly been denied.
I desperately need to be put back on traditional Medicaid. I cannot get appropriate care through managed care because my condition is only treatable by specific clinics who specialize in NF2. Please help me by signing my petition!
