Give the Tetris license to SEGA so they can localize Puyo Puyo Tetris

The Issue

It's time to face the facts: Tetris Ultimate has damaged the Tetris brand. Although the game was advertised as the "ultimate" Tetris experience, players got a buggy, generic, and unplayable game instead. Despite some "patches", many issues with the game still aren't fixed. Evidently, development time was directed towards making DLC to extort more money out of players, instead of fixing the actual game. Even worse, Ubisoft definitely knew about the game's issues, but they decided to release the game in other territories anyways without even bothering to fix the bugs first.

In the eyes of Tetris fans, Ubisoft just wants to make a quick buck, even if that means destroying one of the most beloved gaming franchises in the process. No amount of PR or "patches" will be able to fix the damage that has been done. Therefore, instead of letting Ubisoft keep the Tetris license so they can continue ruining Tetris, we request that you give the license to SEGA so they can release Puyo Puyo Tetris overseas.

For those who don't know, Puyo Puyo Tetris is a crossover puzzle game made by SEGA that was released in 2014. Since Ubisoft held the Tetris license in the west at the time, the game was only released in Japan. In Puyo Puyo Tetris, you can:

  • Play bug-free, guideline Tetris
  • Experience Puyo Puyo, one of Japan's most beloved puzzle franchises.
  • Play Puyo Puyo and Tetris in new game modes. (Mix Mode, Swap Mode)
  • Enjoy a weird story mode with crazy characters.

For the above reasons, we believe giving the Tetris license to SEGA would be a smart decision. Not only do players get a Tetris game that actually works, but they also get to play a Tetris game that innovates upon the Tetris formula, which has become stale in recent years. In addition, Puyo Puyo Tetris has a story mode that's entertaining in a way that elevates the game to something more than the cheap, $10 weekend time-wasters that other games in the puzzle genre have become (e.g. Tetris Ultimate, mobile games).

One more thing. In previous interviews, Henk Rogers has mentioned his dream of making Tetris into an eSports worthy game. Well, Puyo Puyo Tetris is already an eSport in Japan! Puyo Puyo Tetris has the potential to revitalize the Tetris and Puyo Puyo scenes in the west, and it would be a shame to pass on this chance.

Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,

A Puzzle Gaming fan
