Firstly, I hope each person reading this is well and enjoying the first signs of spring.
If you’re receiving this, it will be because you once signed a petition that I started to end the sale of eggs from caged hens in the supermarkets of the UK. These campaigns gathered more support and generated more change than I could have ever imagined. I will be forever grateful for every ounce of energy that those who gave their signatures created.
Since then, I have continued to campaign on diverse issues and have learnt so much about the work we must do to create a world which is far more compassionate and far more conscious. Rather than going into great detail about that journey, I’ll give you a very quick update on where I am today and share with you a new way to stay in the loop with my engagement with activism and campaigns from now on…
Right now, much of my focus is occupied by questions of biodiversity loss, environmental breakdown and how to rewild life… from the personal to the political. I’m twenty years old, a student of international law and relations, and increasingly conscious of just how much hangs in the balance for the youth of today when we talk about halting catastrophic climate change. It’s impossible to overstate the scale of this.
A few months ago, I spent a number of days in Glasgow to be a part of the COP26 proceedings, I compiled my reflections in the following blog. I would be so very grateful if you could take a moment out of your evening (or your morning, depending on when you see this message) to read it. https://gavaghanlucy.wixsite.com/lucy-gavaghan/post/cop26-reflections
The website on which this blog can be found is a very simple one which I have put together as a place to share stories of inspiring events, people and new ideas. Each post will be rooted in environmental issues of some kind. If you have enjoyed following my work in the past, or share my curiosity for the natural world, our connection to it and how best to defend it, I would be delighted for you to continue following along.
To do this, click ‘contact’ at the top of the website and add your email to the box which appears. This means you’ll get an email each time I share a piece of writing. This will be occasional and, I promise, always as meaningful and informative as possible.
There’s an awful lot that I don’t know about the complexity of what we’re up against. All I know for certain is that to have an open-mind and a commitment to push through all in the way is utterly vital.
There is such a lot of beauty in the world around us, regardless of the challenges posed by climate change. I hope you’ll join me as I explore this! As I get older, I am also keen to speak (or write) more candidly about my own understanding of the world of campaigning and to share some deeper personal insights. In time, this will be something I hope to share on the website.
This will be the last update I post here on Change.org. So, if you choose to head to the website, to read the reflection blog and to subscribe to see future posts too, I can’t thank you enough. Equally, if this is the last thing that you see / read from myself for a long while, I am infinitely grateful for your support in signing one of my petitions in the past.
Here’s the link to the website once more - (either scroll to the bottom to subscribe, or press ‘contact, and the box will appear)
In my campaigns, and those of some wonderful activists I am lucky to call my friends, your signatures change the world’s of so many.
Much love,
Lucy
