Stop Lake Placid Zoning Board Approval of Propane Storage Tank

The Issue

The Hurley Brothers Inc. has applied to the Town of North Elba/Village of Lake Placid Joint Review Board to install a 36,000 gallon Propane Storage Tank on Old Military Road, Lake Placid, NY. The proposed site is adjacent to a moderately populous section of Lake Placid and mere blocks away from several Olympic venues, the popular Horse Show grounds, a hospital, a nursing home, a convent, an agricultural research facility and mere feet away from the nearest residence and a cemetery. The site is along a section of highway with limited site distance and fast moving traffic. Although incidents at facilities such as this are rare, they have and do occur and can be catastrophic.

The Hurley Brothers request should be denied by the Joint Review Board. The only benefit of this site accrues to the Hurley Brother's Company. It in no way benefits the nearby residents and organizations or the Lake Placid Community at large. The Hurley Brothers currently purchase their propane from an existing storage facility a few miles away and could continue to do so albeit at a slightly higher cost then the proposed facility would allow. Increased profits is not a legitimate reason to put an entire community at risk, regardless of how small that risk may be. The Adirondacks are beautiful. A Propane Storage Tank is not.
