Terminate the Flock Safety Contract and Remove Invasive Surveillance Cameras from Seymour
Terminate the Flock Safety Contract and Remove Invasive Surveillance Cameras from Seymour
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents, taxpayers, and registered voters of Seymour and Jackson County, Indiana, demand an immediate end to the use of Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras within our community. As documented by regional privacy tracking, Jackson County has a heavily saturated network of these surveillance devices. While marketed under the promise of public safety, these cameras operate as a mass-surveillance dragnet. They indiscriminately log the movements of innocent citizens by capturing vehicle license plates, makes, models, colors, and unique features like bumper stickers. This data maps out the private daily routines of our community members without a warrant, probable cause, or individualized suspicion.Indiana currently has no statewide law governing the retention, access, or oversight of this data. This means our private travel histories are vulnerable to overreach, and recent reports in other Indiana jurisdictions have already exposed instances of law enforcement personnel misusing the Flock network for personal reasons. Furthermore, grassroots pushback like the statewide ACLU of Indiana "Get the Flock Out" campaign and local "Block Flock" protests prove that Hoosiers value their constitutional right to privacy and reject unchecked government surveillance. Our local tax dollars should not fund third-party mass surveillance systems that treat every driver in Seymour as a suspect.Terminate the Flock Safety Contract and Remove Invasive Surveillance Cameras from Seymour and Jackson County, IndianaTo: The Jackson County Board of Commissioners, the Seymour City Council, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and the Seymour Police Department.
