The safety and well-being of students  in schools should be of utmost priority. Unfortunately, recent events have highlighted serious shortcomings in the current hiring practices within Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). It is deeply alarming that GCPS does not conduct thorough background checks when hiring teachers, creating a potential risk for the students they vow to protect.

This issue hit close to home when a high school teacher, who prefers to remain anonymous, revealed that they managed to secure a teaching position under a false name without being questioned or turned away. This incident raises profound concerns about the integrity and effectiveness of the current hiring system.

More troubling is the case of Kareem Clarke, a teacher at McClure Health Science High School. Mr. Clarke, who works closely with kids with special needs, has been identified as a child abuser and the perpetrator of domestic violence against his former fiancée, Siarra Clarke. The fact that such a person is entrusted with the care and education of vulnerable students exposes a glaring oversight in the system.

Immediate action is required to ensure the safety of all students and uphold the reputation of Gwinnett County Public Schools. We call upon GCPS to implement comprehensive and real background checks for all their staff. This should include verifying personal information and looking into any history of violence or abuse. These measures are essential to prevent individuals with fraudulent credentials or harmful pasts from entering our schools.

Furthermore, it is imperative that Mr. Clarke is immediately terminated from his role at McClure Health Science High School.

The demand for these changes is urgent, and the responsibility lies with the decision-makers within GCPS to act swiftly and decisively.
