Terminate FIU PD's 287(g) agreement with ICE
Terminate FIU PD's 287(g) agreement with ICE
The Issue
Florida International University, a beacon of diversity, must re-evaluate its commitment to its core values by terminating the FIU Police Department's 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This agreement allows for local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, which often results in racial profiling, undermines community trust, and diverts resources from essential public safety functions.
The 287(g) program, implemented as a partnership between ICE and local law enforcement agencies, has been fraught with criticism from human rights organizations and community leaders across the United States. According to the ACLU, these agreements have led to widespread discriminatory practices, often targeting people of color disproportionately. This is not aligned with the principles that FIU stands for, nor is it reflective of the vibrant and diverse population that the university aims to protect and empower.
FIU serves a student body rich in cultural diversity, with 80%-90% of the students being minorities. Continuing an agreement that facilitates racial bias not only jeopardizes the safety and freedom of these students but also tarnishes FIU's reputation as a progressive educational institution.
Moreover, studies have shown that community trust in law enforcement is significantly eroded when police duties are intertwined with immigration enforcement. The Center for American Progress reported that localities with 287(g) agreements witness a decline in the willingness of immigrant communities to report crimes or cooperate with law enforcement, fearing deportation or reprisal. This results in decreased public safety for all members of the community.
We, the FIU community, urge FIU PD Chief Alexander Casas, FIU President Jeanette Nunez and the Board of Trustees to immediately terminate the FIU PD's participation in the 287(g) program. Stand with our community in ensuring that FIU remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone, regardless of their immigration status. Please sign this petition to express your support for ending this agreement and promoting more equitable law enforcement practices in our community.
