Retroactive STEM for Class of 2019

Retroactive STEM for Class of 2019
The Issue
At least 12 Tepper MBA 2019 graduates will be forced to leave their jobs and homes in the U.S., within the next three months. Additionally, the COVID-19 crisis has all but eliminated recruitment opportunities and intra-company global transfer options. A retroactive STEM designation would allow these graduates to keep their jobs and extend work authorization by 24 months.
The Tepper MBA received a STEM certification in October 2019, which was not extended to the May 2019 graduates, though their 2017-2019 curriculum meets STEM requirements. Other top business schools enabled retroactive STEM designation to their class of 2019. These include:
- Chicago Booth
- UPenn Wharton
- Dartmouth Tuck
- Columbia GBS
- Berkeley Haas
- Duke Fuqua
- NYU Stern
Tepper School is currently unable to extend the STEM designation retroactively due to a CMU policy prohibiting program code changes post-graduation. A modification to the university’s policy would remove this barrier.
We seek your support in appealing to the CMU Administration to update the policy in line with CMU’s mission to ensure that every individual in our community can achieve their full potential.
