In January 2019, Jefferson County sheriff’s department lost one of their K9s to an unfortunately common ailment to deep-chested dogs called bloat.  My daughters’ service group wished to recognize both K9 Hekko and his handler Sgt. Tim Herzog.  In conversations with Sgt. Herzog, I learned that Tennessee law sees these brave animals as equipment belonging to their respective agencies.  I was astonished to learn this.  I’m not sure how many other states view them this way, but these courageous pups train and live with their partners, who coincidentally do not see them as equipment. They are utilized for their skills to aid law enforcement in search & rescue, narcotics, apprehension, and many other ways.  They give the same service, dedication, and sacrifice to their communities as their human partners do.  They will ignore the danger to save lives of civilians and fellow law enforcement.  They deserve the same praise, recognition, and honor.

I made this petition to make sure that these heroes get the honors and protections they deserve.  If they are injured or killed, those responsible should face prison time the same as they would for assaulting or killing any officer.  They should be recognized for their incredible bravery.  This issue affects us all across the nation and we need change now!  Please sign and share with others!
