Replace plastic utensils used in Tauranga school canteens with compostable utensils
Replace plastic utensils used in Tauranga school canteens with compostable utensils
The issue
From an environmental perspective, plastic is not as sustainable a resource as wood and cardboard, which are both compostable. Like plastic, with materials such as wood and cardboard we can create utensils such as knives, forks, and containers to hold our food in, without using any plastic. Plastic is harmful to the environment because its use often results in pollution which poses a threat to plants, animals, and humans. Chlorinated plastic can release harmful chemicals into the surrounding soil, which can then seep into groundwater or other surrounding water sources and also the ecosystem of the world. For this reason, we want schools in Tauranga to spend more money on Eco-friendly and compostable materials to use in their school canteens. We want the government leaders and the ministry of education figure out a plan and create a policy surrounding the use of plastic utensils used in tauranga schools to ban their use. We also want them to give sufficient funds to tauranga schools specifically for buying more Eco-friendly and compostable utensils to use in their canteens.
