Temporary Closure of Grand Falls, Arizona

The Issue

We, who petition and sign, are Navajo Nation tribal residents, Navajo tribal members, and Navajo families from the Adah’iilíní (Grand Falls) and Leupp  Communities in the State of Arizona on the Navajo reservation, have decided to temporarily close Adah’iilíní (Grand Falls) to the public until further notice.

-          This temporary closure is addressed to visitors and non-residential individuals; with the exception of State and Federally Recognized Tribes for cultural preservation purposes only.

-          This temporary closure is due to:

o   High tourism resulting in uncontrolled trash and disregard for road maintenance.

o   Safety for the land, livestock, animals, and Navajo Nation residents.

o   Non-consultation with local residents for tours.

o   ATV groups off-roading into residential areas, disturbing locals, animals, land.

o   No public education among individuals that the area is located on the Navajo Nation and is overseen by Navajo Nation (NN) tribal members who are Land Users and/or Grazing Permittee Holders.

Navajo Nation residents and families, NN Land Users, NN Grazing Permittee Holders in the Grand Falls area and community have the right to determine the temporary closure to steward the land and protect sacred sites, livestock, and community. The Navajo Nation Parks supports this temporary closure that is determined by these Navajo tribal members who are Land Users and/or Grazing Permittee Holders to the Adah’iilíní (Grand Falls) area.

-          Adah’iilíní (Grand Falls) is located on the Navajo Nation tribal reservation.  Adah’iilíní is within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation Leupp Chapter.  Therefore, Adah’iilíní is not under any National, County, or Park Service.

This temporary closure will allow the Adah’iilíní (Grand Falls) Navajo residents/families, animals, and the land time to rejuvenate and to determine the future of the temporary closure of Grand Falls.  Additional signatures are from individuals who support this temporary closure.
