Tell the WSL: Drop Barclays – No Sponsorship from Genocide and Climate Destruction
The Issue
My name is Rosa, I am 17 years old, and am passionate about women's football. I’ve been playing football for the past 8 years, and the Women’s Super League (WSL) has been a huge part of my life - providing me with both source of inspiration and a community. I've grown up watching WSL games, looking up to players who showed me that women and girls belong on the pitch, and that sport can be a force for good.
The WSL and WSL2 stand for inclusion, equality, and opportunity. It proudly champions diversity, anti-racism, and creating a better future for girls and women in sport. But right now, these values are being undermined by its sponsorship deal with Barclays Bank.
Barclays is complicit in serious human rights abuses. According to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Barclays invests over £1 billion in arms companies that supply weapons used by Israel in its brutal assaults on Palestinians. This includes the ongoing genocide in Gaza, where entire communities have been destroyed and thousands of children - including girls who deserve the same rights, safety, and futures that the WSL promotes - have been killed or displaced.
But Barclays’ impact doesn’t stop in Gaza. The bank is also one of the largest financiers of fossil fuel companies driving the climate crisis. Since 2015, Barclays has invested tens of billions into the fossil fuel industry, worsening a crisis that is already hitting women and girls hardest.
Climate change is not gender-neutral. Around the world, women and girls face the brunt of extreme weather, food insecurity, water shortages, and displacement. Girls are more likely to be pulled out of school to fetch water or help at home when climate disasters strike. In disaster zones, there are higher rates of child marriage and gender-based violence.
Barclays is helping to accelerate this crisis, and in doing so is limiting the very future the WSL claims to build for girls.
The WSL is more than just a league. It has taken a stand against racism by taking the knee. It has promoted visibility and participation for LGBTQ+ players. It has helped inspire a generation of girls to believe that they belong on the pitch and beyond.
Continuing to accept money from Barclays undermines all of that.
We, who have signed this petition, call on the WSL and WSL2 to end its sponsorship agreement with Barclays. Align with partners who reflect your values - not those who profit from genocide, war, and environmental destruction.
Stand with Palestinian girls. Stand with those most affected by climate injustice. Stand with your players and fans.
Drop Barclays. Now.
