Last week, I was joined by representatives from local environmental and organic groups to present your signatures to George Eustice, MP for Camborne and Redruth and (until a few days before!) Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
We had a long discussion with George about glyphosate and the petition and made sure as many of the points as possible from your comments were raised so that he was aware of the concerns that people all over the country have about this toxic substance, which we know is in our food, bodies and environment.
Although we disagreed on some key points, George agreed with us that reforms were needed to reduce the widespread use of this dangerous chemical (and others) and was personally concerned about the use of glyphosate as a 'dessicant' to dry our crops like wheat prior to harvesting them - something which happens a lot here in the UK because of our wet summers, and which is the main way that cancer-linked glyphosate gets into our food.
George also gave us information on the processes for getting questions raised in Parliament so that a ban could be properly discussed by MPs, and other avenues to explore to help with our push for glyphosate to be banned. He also agreed to ensure that the petition and all of your signatures were delivered to the new Minister, Robert Goodwill, with a letter outlining our discussion.
So what next? We'll be working to ensure that the new Minister gives this issue his full attention and trying to get questions about the continued use of dangerous glyphosate across the UK raised in Parliament as soon as possible. But we need your help to do this! Please keep sharing the petition and encouraging people to sign and to get involved!
Thank you again for your continued support!
Abbie
