The UK government announced plans to force social media firms to prioritise "trusted news" on your algorithm in June 2026 to ensure the mainstream media doesn't lose its grip on us, as trust in the mainstream media has collapsed.

As a result, people have turned to independent media and creators on social media. Whilst flawed, this is a freedom that we should have as citizens; the freedom to choose.

I did a degree in journalism from which I graduated in 2025 and decided I could not join the mass media as I did not trust it served the public interest. I now run my own website and social media where I deliver independent news, opinion and interviews and I intend to get regulated by an independent media regulator.

Many online creators do indeed deliver misinformation but that is not grounds to introduce this type of legislation ; we the people should be allowed to make our own choices and use our own brains and not be force fed mass media.

Banning independent media would be too close to an Orwellian nightmare so the government has instead chosen to rig algorithms instead to prioritise what they call "trusted news" ; specifically naming the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV. The government is not transparent as to the criteria of what they decide is trusted.

The Starmer government oversaw incredible rollbacks to our freedoms and he attempted to tighten control of social media through the online safety act and mass arrests as well as a failed attempt to introduce Digital ID.

This is a non partisan issue; every single creator and independent media who is not part of the "trusted news" syndicate will have their videos , articles, tweets etc. pushed down the algorithm.

We managed to roll back Digital ID and the ridiculous plans to scrap jury trials through public pressure so I call upon the public to force Lisa Nandy and Andy Burnham to ensure this law does not pass.
