Tell the Department of the Interior: Don’t Let Birds Die for Industry Convenience

The Issue

The U.S. Department of the Interior just brought back a harmful legal opinion that guts key protections under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). This move means industries can now kill birds “accidentally” — like in oil spills, power line electrocutions, or building collisions — and face no consequences.

The MBTA has protected over 1,000 species of birds for more than 100 years. Without it, millions of birds are at risk — and with bird populations already plummeting (we’ve lost nearly 3 billion birds since 1970), this rollback couldn’t come at a worse time.

We’re calling on Secretary Doug Burgum and the Department of the Interior to:

  • Reverse this decision and bring back full protections under the MBTA
  • Hold industries accountable for killing birds — intentional or not
  • Require companies to use simple, proven methods to keep birds safe

Birds are a vital part of healthy ecosystems — and they need our protection now more than ever.
