Tell the City of Cleveland - Restore Estabrook Recreation Center!

The Issue

Estabrook Recreation Center, located in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood, is an important community asset to the Old Brooklyn, Brooklyn Centre, Stockyard, and Clark Fulton neighborhoods of the City of Cleveland. As such, it should be maintained and updated so that it can properly serve its role in the community.

The primary issue is clear: Estabrook Recreation Center is in need of serious repairs in nearly every area.  The most important concern is the leaking roof which has caused water damage throughout the building including the floor of the gym and the ceiling in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.  The unstable gym roof has also been losing bolts which fall from the roof and pose a safety hazard.  Additionally, the parking lot is extremely rutted and pot-holed and needs to be resurfaced, the workout room equipment is duct taped and torn, the playground is poorly maintained, the baseball diamond’s backstop needs repairs, and the locker rooms have missing, damaged, and broken hardware.

In addition to concerns regarding physical issues at Estabrook, the staffing has also become problematic.  An Estabrook employee recently retired and there has been no indication whether that person will be replaced.  The swimming pool is also understaffed with respect to lifeguards, particularly in the summer, effectively limiting the number of swimmers to 120 people.

We are petitioning the City because we love Estabrook Recreation Center, and we want it to be a safe, clean, and updated facility that we can be proud to call our own.  Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
