The Issue

We, the undersigned, DO NOT NEED OR WANT a data center in Botetourt County, Virginia.

Our community values its rural charm, natural beauty, and serene environment that a large-scale project like the Google AI data center threatens to disrupt. This AI data center, if allowed to continue, will bring extensive construction, increased traffic, and vast environmental impacts to our county, changing the landscape we all know and love. FOREVER.

A project of this magnitude requires careful consideration of both its immediate and long-term effects on our community. This isn't just about economic growth; it's about preserving the very essence of Botetourt County. Our previous Board Members could never have imagined the magnitude of a project like this. Long after the construction workers go home, we will have to clean up the damage and garbage they will leave behind. Additionally, the construction phase would vastly increase local emissions and disturb precious wildlife habitats.

Moreover, data centers consume tremendous amounts of electricity and water. Those resources are crucial for our local population and ecosystems. Such an increase in demand could lead to higher utility rates for residents and potential water shortages.

THIS DATA CENTER IS A HYPERSCALE PROJECT, PROPOSED TO BE 1 MILLION SQUARE FEET AND WILL USE APPROX. 8 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER A DAY!

THAT WATER USAGE IS EQUIVALENT TO A CITY OF APPROXIMATELY 88,000 PEOPLE MOVING INTO BOTETOURT COUNTY!

According to PJM, our power grid is already inadequate. A data center must run 24/7/365! When the power goes out, our Botetourt County neighbors will suffer from additional air and noise pollution, caused by huge generators running 24/7.

Economically, data centers promise to create jobs, yet these jobs are often not as numerous as promised or suited to the existing workforce's skills. In America, we already see thousands of jobs being lost forever to AI right now! Instead, we should focus on supporting businesses that better align with Botetourt County’s community values. Several businesses could be housed on the same 312-acre site promoting more jobs and using less resources, while creating more tax revenue than Google ever will.

What about a new High School? That we need. We don't NEED GOOGLE!

We must urge the Botetourt County Board to carefully evaluate the long-term costs and benefits associated with this project. The community is counting on them to make the right decision by safeguarding our environment, quality of life, and local character.

Do NOT let the Board of Directors neglect their FIDUCIARY duty to the citizens of Botetourt County!

Your voice matters, and together we can protect beautiful Botetourt County from Google!

Future generations will look back upon the decisions we all make today. Let's make them proud!

We must act NOW, before it is too late!

Please join us in telling the Botetourt County Board to say NO TO GOOGLE and quash the AI data center!

Sign the petition today to ensure the Board hears our collective voice!

Thank you all so much! - Jessie :)
