The Issue
Dear FBOP Director Colette Peters, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBOP Assistant Director Chris Bina, FCI Terre Haute Warden T. Rule, and Case Manager Bradley Klink,
We call for you to:
1. Transfer Marty out of the Communication Management Unit (CMU)
2. Close the CMUs entirely
Marty MartyG Gottesfeld is a political prisoner who was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for saving a young girl’s life. Not only has the DOJ and BOP kept him in solitary for months at a time, but they’re forcing him to serve his sentence in the draconian Communications Management Unit (CMU) in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The Center for Constitutional Rights calls the CMUs “the federal prison system’s experiment in group segregation” and investigative journalist Will Potter calls them “the secret US prisons you've never heard of before". Most people have never even heard of these constitutional dead-zones. There are only two in the entire U.S.-- one in Marion IL and the other in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Marty was sent to the CMU in Terre Haute, IN in 2019/2020. In 2021, his case manager told him he was being recommended for “step down” – or transfer out of – the CMU. Instead, they transferred him to the other CMU in Marion, IL, and then back again to the CMU in Terre Haute. The DOJ and BOP have never given a reason for why they are holding him in a CMU or why they recommended him for step down and then won’t let him go.
Ever since NBCUniversal’s Peacock let it be known that they took an interest in political prisoner Marty MartyG Gottesfeld’s case for their four-part docuseries, The Battle for Justina Pelletier, the Justice Department and its Bureau of Prisons have made it nearly impossible for Gottesfeld to have any legal telephone calls with his attorneys whatsoever despite his upcoming court deadlines. See e.g. 28 U.S.C Section 2255 (f) and www.FreeMartyG.com. Is this what Julian Assange can expect too, if extradited to Washington?
We the undersigned demand that the Justice Department transfer Marty out of the CMU and shut down the CMUs entirely.
