The Issue

There cannot be public power without public trust. The Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) has been denying the people of North Omaha clean air and a healthful environment for decades. Despite numerous promises to stop burning coal at the North Omaha Power Plant, OPPD continues to kick the can down the road, breaking its commitments, and betraying the people while choking them out with toxic coal emissions.

OPPD recently voted to continued burning coal in North Omaha and, even worse, they based their decision on a fraudulent Health Risk Assessment report that concluded exposure to coal emissions does not threaten public health. The report was eviscerated by numerous public health scientists and the Douglas County Department of Health with one scientists noting, "reports like these should not be written by consulting firms with ties to the fossil fuel industry."

It's obvious that OPPD is continuing the burning of coal to accommodate data centers.  OPPD Board Members are soliciting Big Tech corporations to build data centers in our City and State at the literal expense of the people and their public health. Enough is enough - OPPD needs to START exercising the tenets of PUBLIC power and stop exercising the ideology of WHITE power and environmental racism.

Sign our petition and demand the following:

  1. OPPD must rescind their fraudulent Health Risk Assessment and prepare a new one with independent public health scientists;
  2. OPPD must issue a public apology to the people of North Omaha for its blatant dereliction of duty and attempting to gaslight the people;
  3. OPPD must stop signing Non Disclosure Agreements with Big Tech corporations to bring data centers to our city and state;
  4. OPPD must immediately stop burning coal in North Omaha and transition to cleaner energy sources as it has promised for the last 10 years;
  5. OPPD must issue a moratorium on any and all data centers in the Omaha metro area.

Omaha is open for business but we are not for sale. It's time for OPPD to stop selling out to Big Tech and start putting the people over profits.
