The Issue

Tell the Ohio EPA, Keep this potentially dangerous threat out of our neighborhoods by revoking this air pollution permit!

Ohio EPA has granted SOBE Thermal Systems, LLC a ten year air pollution permit to operate a “Thermolyzer” pyrolysis unit to heat and convert tire chips to synthetic gas next to downtown Youngstown. These plants are dangerous to public health and safety because the emissions from the pyrolysis of tires include dioxins, furans, and volatile organic compounds that cause cancer.

Youngstown is already designated an Environmental Justice Community of Concern (US EPA) due to decades of steel mill pollution leading to bad health outcomes for residents. Youngstown has enough toxic air pollution! We do not want to be SOBE’s guinea pigs for this un-tested, not-proven-safe technology.

We believe in a future for Youngstown that is free from the threat of polluting industries and prioritizes the health and well-being of its residents and environment. Urge the Ohio EPA to listen to the voices of the people and ensure that Youngstown remains a safe and healthy place to live, work, and thrive.

SOBE Concerned Citizens, the undersigned residents of Youngstown, Ohio, and concerned citizens everywhere, strongly oppose the construction and operation of a pyrolysis plant within city limits.
