Tell Mexico: Don't Remove Vital Protections for the Vaquita

The Issue

The vaquita — the world’s rarest marine mammal — is on the brink of extinction.

With only 7 to 10 individuals estimated to remain in the wild, every decision matters. Gillnets remain the primary threat, entangling and drowning these small porpoises in the Upper Gulf of California.

In 2020, Mexico adopted regulations that, if fully enforced, were considered the best chance to prevent the vaquita’s extinction.

Now, new proposals would reportedly shrink the protected area by 85%, allow gillnets in known vaquita habitat, and permit nighttime fishing — changes that conservationists warn could seal the species’ fate.

At this critical moment, the world is watching.

We call on the Government of Mexico to reject any rollback of vaquita protections, fully enforce existing gillnet bans, and strengthen monitoring and anti-poaching efforts in the Upper Gulf.

The extinction of the vaquita would not just be Mexico’s loss — it would be a global tragedy.

There is still time to act. But not much.

Keep the protections. Enforce the law. Save the vaquita.
