Tell major TikTok advertisers to stop supporting discriminatory practices
The Issue
Foundational Black American history chronicles the experiences, struggles, and contributions of Black Americans from the era of slavery to modern achievements in culture, politics, and society in the United States of America. For us, this is not merely history; it is the fabric of our identity, and it inspires us to stand resilient in the face of adversity. Our voice matters, and we should not be subjected to online threats from refugees and immigrants, nor should we be targeted unfairly by TikTok's community guidelines.
On TikTok, Black American users are experiencing systemic discrimination. We are being cyberbullied, stalked, harassed, and unfairly targeted, leading to our pages being restricted or unjustly removed. These actions not only silence our voices but trivialize our struggles. It is disheartening and alarming that TikTok's community guidelines seem to apply more harshly and frequently to us. This must change.
As a platform that benefits immensely from diverse content, TikTok has a responsibility to its community of creators, including Black Americans, to ensure fair treatment and protection against harassment. However, it appears that TikTok's practices continue to marginalize Black voices. Major advertisers on TikTok, such as industry leaders in retail, technology, and consumer goods, play a crucial role in shaping the ethical landscape of online platforms. Their financial influence can drive change and demand accountability. We will be initiating a class action lawsuit."
We call on major advertisers, who align themselves with values of diversity and inclusion, to take a stand. We urge you to stop advertising on TikTok until the platform demonstrates substantial reforms to protect Black American users from discrimination and aligns its policies with the values of equity and fairness.
Join us in demanding this change. Let’s hold TikTok accountable and ensure that Black American voices are heard and respected. Together, we can push for a more equitable and inclusive online environment. Please sign this petition and help us urge these advertisers to reconsider their support for a platform that fails to uphold justice and equality for all its users.
